About Us

We are Tom & Babette Lawton. We retired from farming in 2000 and the farmland is now in the hands of an excellent tenant.

The farm was acquired by Tom’s grandfather, another Tom Lawton. When he came to look at his purchase in his pony and trap on 11th November 1918, all the church bells were ringing in Ashbourne and surrounding villages, celebrating the end of WW1.

The present farmhouse was built in 1997 in a traditional style but the Lawtons were not the first on this site. Bronze Age enclosures have been found on the farm and a funeral urn was uncovered nearby. Bradley is mentioned in the Domesday survey and the remains of an ancient Saxon road run across the farm. The small village church dates back to the 14th century.

Green at Heart

Tom has always had a keen interest in wildlife. He has planted trees all his life and the farm is dotted with copses and woods in addition to the existing ancient woodland. He manages the woods by coppicing and pollarding and replants where dying trees need to be felled. We have seen the number of bird species increase over the years and the RSPB have conducted surveys and visited several times. Wide field margins provide wildlife corridors and we enjoy a healthy population of magnificent brown hares. Badgers and foxes can be observed at dusk as can several species of owls. You may be able to see all these from your bedroom windows!

Arable crops are grown on the south facing slopes and beef cattle graze the pastures facing the village. So the farm retains its traditional balance and helps preserve the rural environment and protect the landscape for the enjoyment of future generations.

We are also keen on lessening our carbon footprint and using renewable energy. Our latest venture is an array of photovoltaic panels on our roof. Washing machines & dishwasher use this solar electricity during the day. The tumble dryer is only used as a back up and we try and dry all the laundry outside (weather permitting!). We now have an E-car charging socket to enable you to recharge you electric car. We recycle and upcycle as much as we can.

Your bedrooms are furnished mainly with pre-loved family and local sales pieces. In the bathrooms, the toiletries come in family size dispensers to cut down on unnecessary packaging. We buy local, use seasonal produce and Tom tries to grow as much as he possibly can. We always endeavour to be as environmentally friendly as possible. We hope that you will assist by giving us paper, plastic and cans and only using the waste bins provided for non recyclables.
